After beating Pine Prairie last week for its first win, Sacred Heart lost Friday night, 35-0, to a dominating, undefeated Crusader squad.
The Trojans, who fall to 1-3 on the year, visit Mamou next Thursday. The Green Demons beat Pine Prairie, 28-14, Friday night.
Westminster improves to 4-0, and the Crusaders host Northlake Christian next week.
Sacred Heart Head Coach Dutton Wall didn’t have much to say after the game.
“This one’s over,” Wall shrugged. “The good news is that we didn’t sustain any injuries, just a little soreness. But, we’ll get over that.
“We’ll come back to practice and get ready for Mamou.”
From the very first play from scrimmage - a 12-yard run - Westminster exerted control over the Trojans. The 12-play, 65-yard opening drive lasted five minutes, and Westminster didn’t throw the ball one time. Chandler George capped the drive with a four-yard run.
After scoring on the opening drive, the Westminster defense intercepted a pass. The Crusaders promptly marched down the field again for another touchdown. The Crusaders kept the ball for nearly the whole first quarter, scoring again for a 14-0 lead. This time, James Martinez scored on a five yard run.
In the second quarter, the Crusaders completed two big passes for 67 yards on an 83-yard drive that was capped off by a five-yard Tyler Louviere run.
Later in the second quarter, quarterback Thomas Kemp scored on a 20-yard jaunt.
Westminster took it to Sacred Heart the entire first half. The Crusaders scored all four times it had possession of the ball for a 28-0 halftime lead. By halftime, Westminster had 218 yards of total offense. Sacred Heart had just 79 yards of offense.
“Coming into the game,” Crusader Head Coach Tommy Badon explained, “we thought that we could control the line of scrimmage. We lined up with two tight-ends, and took it to them.”
Wall agreed with that assessment.
“That’s what happens when a good, disciplined running attack matches up with our inability to tackle,” Wall noted.
The Crusaders quickly scored at the beginning of the third quarter for a 35-0 lead. Kemp scored from eight yards out. Tim Redd nailed his fifth extra point of the evening to set the final score.
Then, Westminster played the rest of the game with its JV offense and heavy substitutions on defense.
Trojan sophomore Drew David led all rushers with 112 yards on 18 carries.
Westminster spread its offense around, with several players getting carries. Quarterback Kemp led the Crusaders with 70 yards and two touchdowns. He also was a perfect five-of-five passing for 87 yards.
Louviere had 61 yards and a score for Westminster.
